The Next Platform

I once expected graduation to mean everything. When it arrived, I discovered that it was a beginning. I return to that thought whenever an achievement seems to promise a final, settled version of life.
The traveller has reached a platform, but the tracks continue. That need not diminish the journey already made. It may simply release the destination from an impossible duty: to answer every question that accompanied us there. There is relief in allowing an arrival to be real without asking it to be final. We can put down the suitcase for a moment. The next departure does not cancel the distance we have travelled.
