The Luxury of a Second Attempt

We admire people who persist after a setback. Their determination may deserve the admiration. Yet persistence also requires something left over.
Another application takes time. Another business attempt may require money. Another difficult conversation asks for emotional reserves. The advice to try again quietly assumes that these resources remain available.
A failed attempt can be a lesson for one person and a closed route for another. That difference should complicate the stories we tell about perseverance.
It should also shape the opportunities we design. If a process permits a correction or another attempt without disproportionate cost, it can distinguish a temporary failure from a permanent exclusion.
The second attempt is not always evidence of a stronger character. Sometimes it is evidence that the first attempt was allowed to be survivable.
