The Person beyond the Profile

A recommendation arrives because you liked something before. It may be excellent. It may also resemble the last recommendation, which resembled the one before that.
A profile is an attempt to make a person legible through recorded choices. That can reduce the effort of finding something worthwhile. It can also turn a history of decisions into an increasingly narrow expectation about what the next decision should be.
The difficulty is that preferences are not simply waiting to be discovered. They can change through encounters that no existing profile would have predicted. A book chosen by accident, an unfamiliar conversation, or a subject initially found difficult may alter what someone wants to seek.
No recommendation system can offer the whole world at once. Selection is necessary, and random novelty is not automatically valuable. The question is whether the selection leaves room for a person to become more than the pattern it has identified.
Useful controls might include an understandable way to reset assumptions, request something unfamiliar, or see why an item appeared. The aim is not to eliminate assistance but to make its influence easier to recognise.
There is a human habit worth guarding against too: describing ourselves through the categories a service repeatedly supplies. A suggested identity can begin to feel like a discovered fact.
The profile should remain a tool for serving the person. When the person starts feeling obliged to remain recognisable to the profile, the relationship has quietly reversed.
